PRESS RELEASE

On Monday, 21st of December 2020, the Kaduna Power Supply Company (KAPSCO) completed the installation of 34 streetlights in Soba Local Government Area under its rural lighting initiative – a component of the Kaduna Power Project. The Kaduna Power Project aims to provide sustainable power for the Green Economic Zone through a 2x60MVA transmission substation, provide 1.3MW of solar to power 255 Primary Healthcare Centers and install 1,382 solar-powered streetlights.

The streetlights are being installed to light up rural communities, inter-Statemotor parks, night markets and roads leading to rural primary healthcare centers; while the Urban Renewal Program focuses on urban areas.  By lighting up inter-Statemotor parks and night markets, KAPSCO hopes to enhance security and boost night-time economy.

With over 700 solar-powered streetlights already installed across various LGAs in the state, the Managing Director, Ms. Dolapo Popoola, further reiterated the State’s commitment towards becoming a self-sufficient state. She encouraged the public to help safeguard the streetlights by reporting any faults or accidents and refraining from vandalism. She further said that the streetlights had been geotagged and marked with a unique numbering scheme uploaded to the central Kaduna Streetlight Locator. This helps KAPSCO to quickly attend to faulty streetlights once communicated through any of KAPSCO’S communication channels.

The 34 streetlights at Soba have been installed on the road leading to Soba Primary Healthcare Center to improve access to healthcare. Furthermore, under the Kaduna Solar for Health program, a 47.5kWp solar system has been installed to power Maigana General Hospital in Soba Local Government.
